Prepare to brush up on your climbing abilities, because Sony has published the first trailer for the Uncharted film, dubbed Uncharted. Uncharted will “reveal” how a young Nathan Drake became an archeological mercenary, how he befriends his mentor Sully, how he meets femme fatale Chloe Frazer, and most likely how he acquired his beige shirt, since that’s what prequels do. Nathan Drake is played by Tom Holland, Sully is played by Mark Wahlberg, Chloe is played by Sophia Ali, and the villain is played by Antonio Banderas. Uncharted, directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom), will be released on February 18, 2022, after numerous lockdown-related delays. Here’s the trailer for Uncharted: The Lost Legacy:
Add the Uncharted trailer to the list of things that feel like the term “meh” was created only for them. Ignoring the video games for a minute, was there anything in the clip that caught your eye? Were the action sequences thrilling to watch? Did Tom Holland ever feel as though he was in danger? Did any of the personalities strike you as amusing or intriguing? That is not the case for me. That was blander than reheated veggies, and it gives the impression that Uncharted was created out of duty rather than a genuine desire to tell a narrative. They’ve been attempting to make this movie for almost a decade, and it’s gone through many iterations on its journey to the screen; at this point, I believe Sony simply wanted to get something in the cinema so they could stop talking about it. And it seems that no one will be talking about it.
In terms of how it seems to be an adaptation of an outstanding video game series (I played and liked all four major games but missed the Chloe offshoot, for the record), it appears to be just that. This is just Uncharted in name; I adore Tom Holland, but there’s nothing about him that makes me think of Nathan Drake, and the Uncharted trailer only confirmed my suspicions. The same can be said about Mark Wahlberg, who is much too young and lacks the charm and worldliness required to portray Sully. (Do you recall David O. Russell asking him to portray Nathan Drake? Of all the non-fan suggestions, it is currently the best-case scenario.) Sophia Ali has no charm as Chloe, no indication of the danger and sultriness that made her so entertaining in Uncharted 2; part of this is due to the need of making her and Tom Holland seem to be about the same age, and because Holland is too young, Chloe must be as well. If this is meant to be a precursor to the games, as Sony claims, it’s off to a terrible start since we already know how Nate and Sully met, and it’s not like this. They could have just said that it is a different version of the characters, but they want players to feel obligated to watch it. (It’s unlikely that pissing them off by spoiling the narrative would help.) I haven’t given much attention to the overall response – who could be bothered after seeing that? – but it’s hard to imagine anybody was captivated by this.
What were your thoughts on the new Uncharted trailer? Have you tried any of the games? Is it even a joke to wonder whether you believe that the Nathan Fillion short film will be the last Uncharted adaptation?
