Nintendo May Be Preparing to Unveil a New Home Console

Ever since its debut in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has been a hallmark of mobile gaming. On-the-go accessibility and compactability are its primary calling cards. Nearly a decade later, it remains the standard-bearer for handheld/convertible video game consoles. Could the Switch now also be prepared to set a new bar for home consoles? The answer is a definitive maybe.

On the one hand, this conjecture is somewhat shocking. The Switch and Switch 2, after all, work as both handheld and household consoles, since they can be hooked up to TVs and other monitors. The Switch 2, in particular, seemingly leaves little desire for a specific home console. Unlike its predecessor, its conversions have the ability to scale up to 4K resolution on larger screens.

On the other hand, perhaps we should have seen this discussion coming. Video game usage is more ingrained into the fabric of society than ever. Just look at the sales of handheld consoles. For that matter, look at the rise of esports. Their popularity continues to crescendo. New leagues (or new arms of existing leagues) are being formed every year, because the demand is mushrooming. Media outlets cover these events. Every one of the sportsbook websites reviewed by SportsBettingSites carries lines for esports competitions.

Manufacturing a Nintendo Switch 2 home-specific console leans into this societal trend, which truthfully, is probably closer to a lifestyle. As much as the company views portability as its guiding ethos, esports interests are borne from—and its competitions predominantly take place on—home terminals.

Another Reason Nintendo Might Consider a Switch Home Console

Producing a Nintendo Switch HC could also be a means to the video game giant disrupting the physical hardware industry for Microsoft (Xbox) and Sony (PlayStation). Each of these companies continue to offer dedicated home consoles. More recently, they have actually tried to emphasize the portability element that Nintendo was so quick to popularize.

It makes sense, then, that Nintendo’s developers might want to operate in reverse. Especially when Microsoft and Sony, in the eyes of many, might be veering too far from their roots.

Microsoft is drawing a particularly large amount of scrutiny for a shift to services and subscriptions rather than physical hardware. As Andy Chalk previously wrote for PC Gamer, the company has been trying to broaden Xbox’s horizons for the better part of a decade:

“‘As we’ve expanded our focus beyond the console, the Xbox brand has also evolved from its original roots,’ Xbox Game Studios corporate vice president Matt Booty said. ‘Today, Xbox is our gaming brand across all devices, no matter how or where you want to play, or who you want to play with.’ The change reflects Microsoft’s desire to spread its Xbox wings, and if we’re reading between the lines, seems to indicate a dedication to expanding its gaming business beyond the Xbox console. In the past two years Microsoft has committed to putting all its first party games on PC, and its plans seem to be pointing towards even bigger things: making Xbox Live a platform that extends to all sorts of hardware. Conceivably, Xbox games could follow, too.”

Fast forward to 2026, and this remains a Microsoft focus. (Xbox Game Pass, anyone?) The company is also committed to Project Helix, which refers to its next gaming console, but broader accessibility remains folded into that plan.

To that end, a Switch home console could be Nintendo’s way of repositioning itself, once more, as the preeminent provider for living-room hardware.

Should We Expect Nintendo to Actualize Speculation?

This is a tough question to answer. But given Nintendo’s obsession with portability over the years, we find it hard to believe they’ll hammer out a specific Switch home console.

Potential issues abound. While many have argued a home console could be cheaper than the handheld switch, this does not pass the sniff test, as William Judd of Digital Foundry argues:

“The cost savings argument also may not hold up to scrutiny. While eschewing many components from the Switch 2 design would make for a cheaper box to produce, those savings would be undercut by the design work and production costs of a dedicated cooling solution, a new enclosure and potentially a different board layout as well. Once all of these costs are accounted for, is there still a $100 or $150 in savings to pass on to consumers? Let’s also not forget that a standard joypad would still need to be bundled.”

Demographical responses must be put under the microscope as well. Even with the inundation of information in today’s digital age, confusion among tech consumers is not hard to sow.

Nintendo knows this all too well. When they released WII U back in 2012, many presumed it was an expansion of the WII, rather than its intended successor. On top of that, other brands have taken flack to releasing different pieces of physical hardware under the same name. PlayStation 6 users know what we’re talking about.

For now, at least, it doesn’t seem like a Switch home console makes financial or logistical sense to Nintendo’s business model.
