With the Mandalorian set to debut on Disney+ in 2018, it’s fair game for speculation about who might be among the show’s main characters. One name that keeps popping up is Gina Carano, who played Angel Dust in Marvel Comics’ The Punisher movie and Haywire. She may not be an official part of the series yet but she seems like a perfect fit!
Actor Giancarlo Esposito, best known for his role on “Breaking Bad,” recently spoke with Variety about his newest show that is currently in production – Star Wars: Mandalorian. He was asked what some of the inspirations were for this new series and he said one of them was Gina Carano’s fighting skills!

ToggleGiancarlo Esposito, who plays Gina Carano in the Mandalorian, delivers an honest response to the issue of who his favorite co-star is.
Despite her departure earlier this year, Giancarlo Esposito, who plays the Mandalorian, says Gina Carano remains his favorite Star Wars co-star. Esposito and Carano play opposing characters in The Mandalorian, with Esposito as the villainous Moff Gideon and Carano representing the reluctant hero Cara Dune. Both actors had pivotal roles in the first two seasons of the show, but although Esposito is expected to return in season three of The Mandalorian, Carano’s time in the galaxy far, far away was cut short early this year.
Carano has been chastised for provocative social media statements. The conservative actress was against wearing masks in the face of the coronavirus outbreak and made transphobic and anti-Semitic comments. Carano was sacked from The Mandalorian and any prospective spinoffs as the backlash against her escalated. Cara Dune will not be replaced, and it is unclear whether or not The Mandalorian will recognize her in the future. Carano, for her part, has gone on to other ventures, and some fans have blasted the choice to let her go, while others have praised her.
Aside from politics, there is one Mandalorian actor who boldly displays his admiration for Carano. Esposito, speaking at FAN EXPO Denver (via Joe Turner), responded to the issue of who he prefers to work with the most, The Mandalorian, by expressing his whole support for Carano. He didn’t say anything about her rejection or where they could differ on personal beliefs, instead merely stating why he enjoys acting opposite her. According to Esposito,
“All right, I’ll say it right now: Gina Carano.” I’m not going to comment on any of that [controversy] except for her political opinions and what she said, whether I believe it’s wrong or acceptable. As performers, we should definitely close our mouths at times – I know I should. But there are instances when I am unable to do so. I have to state what I think because it needs to be recorded. I had a great time working with her. I don’t care what her views are because she’s kind, gorgeous, and amazing. I admire her for coming late to acting and being so raw, creative, and gorgeous, and I believe she’s a nice person. As a result, I call her out and tell her she’s one of my favorites.”
Following her firing, Esposito joined Emily Swallow of The Mandalorian’s Armorer in publicly supporting Carano. Swallow, like Esposito, avoided discussing what occurred and instead focused on Carano’s on-set attitude. This must be a tough scenario for those working on The Mandalorian, and it’s understandable that some of them have always loved working with Carano, despite their differing viewpoints. Carano appeared to feel the same way, as she stated after her firing that she still loved Mandalorian leader Pedro Pascal.
Regardless of the performers’ personal concerns, production on Season 3 of The Mandalorian proceeded sans Carano. It will be unusual to have a season of the Disney + series without Carano, who was a key component of the first few episodes. When The Mandalorian returns, Pascal’s Din Djarin will certainly have his hands full with Moff Gideon, thus his absence may not be noticed as much. Fans will have to wait and see what happens.
